Culture shock

If you find you are suffering from culture shock, anxiety or home sickness, don’t suffer in silence! Talk to someone about it: you may well find that other students have similar feelings and you can help each other get through it.

Don’t forget to…

  • Allow yourself time to settle in
  • Make sure you eat and sleep well
  • Get to know other students
  • Take time to do things you enjoy
  • Keep yourself busy
  • Stay in contact with friends and family at home but don’t spend all your time doing this as it can make home sickness worse.

If you do need to talk to someone, please don’t hesitate to contact the Go Abroad Team at Kent. In addition to us, you can also get help from your host University, your employer or your academic school.

Did you know?

Whilst abroad, you can access support online through Spectrum Life, Kent's external provider of mental health support.

Many host universities also offer counselling or other forms of support, or students can access support through local health services.
