Kent returning student accommodation FAQs

Returning Student Accommodation FAQs

Canterbury

We have set aside a designated number of rooms across our campus for returning students.

Application pages to apply to live on the Canterbury campus again for the next academic year (starting in September 2024) will go live in mid January 2024.

All applications are sorted on a first come first served basis and room demand can be high, so please apply early to avoid disappointment. If you apply after our designated returning student accommodation is full you can request to be added to a waiting list.

You can register your interest online using our short form from Wednesday 8 November 2023 -  7 January 2024.

The best benefit to registering your interest is that you'll receive 24-hour early access to our application pages.

You can sign up for yourself or on behalf of a group, you'll just need everyone's full names and Kent email addresses and we'll email you with your early access link to our application pages open.

We are guaranteeing a room offer to...

  • The first 1,000 full-time returning undergraduate and postgraduate applicants. This includes KMMS students. (After this you may still receive a room offer but we cannot guarantee an offer).
  • Any first-year, full-time Canterbury students who lived off-campus in 2023/24 and registered their interest using our form before 7 January 2024.

All applicants must meet our eligibility criteria (PDF 189KB) to receive an offer. This includes having any outstanding fees with the University settled by the end of the current academic year (16 June 2024), and that you do not have an adverse disciplinary record.

You will need to apply through your MyAccommodation portal.

Kent and Medway Medical School students have their own dedicated KMMS application link.

Just make sure you select the correct year (2024-25) you want accommodation for when applying.

If you'd like a refresher on the application process take a look at our how to apply blog.

Don't worry if you used the Portal last year and have forgotten your login details, you can reset your password with your student ID number (which you can find on your KentOne card).

If you haven't used the Portal before then you can register for a new account following the on-screen instructions.

We have a limited number of rooms across our campus accommodation for returning students in all areas. Rooms will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and according to an individual's specific needs, so the earlier you apply the better as there is high demand for en-suite and adapted rooms especially.

KMMS students can apply for KMMS accommodation in Park Wood.

You can select up to four accommodation type preferences (3 minimum). You should only list accommodations that you would be happy to accept to ensure you are only allocated to a room you would want to live in. We would recommend including at least one non-en-suite option within this and not choosing multiple rooms within one college area.

Yes, we will try to accommodate any requests to share with friends wherever possible.  When applying as a group you will need:

  • The full name and student ID number of every member of your group as we will only allocate people together where all applications show they wish to live with the other.
  • Your group will need to either fill an entire house/flat, or fill no more than 50% of the house/flat you are applying for. For example, a group of five friends could live in a Park Wood five-bed house as they fill it, or a Keynes house as they only half-fill it, but could not live in a six-bed Park Wood house as this would be unfair to the final student living in the house.
  • Large groups, apply early to allow us the best chance to keep you all together in your preference.
  • Your group should all apply on the same day, with the same preferences in the same order.

All guidelines must be met to allow us to fulfil requests. Where requests don't meet the above, groups may be broken up.

We do not require a deposit to secure a room. All we ask is that in fairness to other students you don't apply unless you want to live on campus or cancel your application before being offered a room if you no longer require it.

Make sure you definitely want your room before accepting your offer, because at this point you will have agreed to all the usual T&Cs.

There are no application or deposit fees to apply for returning student accommodation meaning the price you see if the price you pay. 2024/25 prices will be available online in January 2024.

Included in your accommodation fees are all the energy bills (electricity, Wi-Fi, water and heating), personal possessions insurance, free Kent Sport membership and your meal plan if you select an accommodation that includes a meal plan.

We'll send you an email confirmation if you have secured one our guaranteed offers from 31 January 2024.  If you don't receive this email don't worry, it does not mean you will not receive a room offer in due course, just that we can't guarantee it.

Your accommodation offer will then be sent out from late March/early April 2024 onwards depending on your application date. When you receive your offer of accommodation, you will only be able to see the main accommodation type you have been offered at this stage. You'll find out your specific block/room number once you've completed your full accommodation induction.

Yes, you can log in to your application online and update your room preferences until 16 February 2024.

Once you have received your allocation (from March onwards) you will need to log into your MyAccommodation portal again and accept the offer typically within seven days. You will then need to complete your accommodation e-induction before arriving.

We have vacation accommodation set aside so that rooms are available on campus for those who need them, although you will need to move to a different room for the vacation period with your belongings. More information about vacation accommodation is available online.

You can cancel your application before accepting your accommodation offer.

Once you have accepted your accommodation offer you will have agreed to all the usual T&Cs and cancelling your application is not possible unless there are extenuating circumstances.

KMMS students can also apply to return to live in Park Wood. As KMMS accommodation is offered on a different contract length to match your course dates, you will need to apply via a dedicated link which will be emailed to you by the Accommodation Office before applications go live. Find out more on our KMMS accommodation webpage.

You do not need to be a postgraduate student to apply for Woolf College as we've set aside dedicated blocks just for returning undergraduate students. Each flat occupancy will be made up of all undergraduate or postgraduate students, not mixed.

Yes if you are a full-time Canterbury student we agreed to guarantee a campus room for your second year if you lived off campus this year (e.g. in Riverside or Pier Quays).

You will need to register your interest using our online form between 8 November 2023 - 7 January 2024 so that we can confirm your eligibility and know that you wish to take up this offer. You can then apply in the normal way in January.

You can take a look at our timeline for when you can expect to hear from us. When you apply, you will be contacted by email as to whether you have successfully secured one of our guaranteed offers on Wednesday 31 January 2024. Your accommodation offer will then be sent out from late March/early April onwards depending on your application date.

If you are unhappy with the accommodation you are offered, please contact us as soon as possible as depending on availability we can add your request to our database. Please note, if you decline your offer you will not automatically be offered an alternative.  Find out more about what to do when receiving your offer in our recent blog.

You'll need to accept or decline your offer before the expiry date, but you can cancel your accommodation application at any time prior to accepting your offer. Once you have accepted your offer, you will have agreed to all the usual T&Cs.

If you have any other questions please get in touch with us in the Accommodation Office. You can call +44 (0)1227766660, email accomm@kent.ac.uk or message us via Twitter or Facebook.
