Services you can access in your room

  • The internet, including outgoing TCP and UDP connections
  • Some phone services, including Skype (see restrictions noted below)
  • TV and radio streaming and catch-up services
  • University IT resources such as your files and student printers

We may occasionally withdraw services at short notice for security purposes.

Services restricted for security reasons

  • Incoming traffic (TCP and UDP) blocked
  • ICMP traffic blocked
  • Some outbound TCP and UDP traffic (see list below)
  • Firewall restrictions apply, to maintain security of all computers on the network
  • Computers on the wireless and wired networks are not visible externally
  • Some traffic from bandwidth-hungry applications eg BitTorrent and Flash video is throttled to avoid using the entire network bandwidth
Service Port(s) Notes
External email sending TCP 25 Only secure SMTP servers will work (port 465). As most ISP SMTP servers are not secure, please use the Kent mail server ( for sending email.
Messenger UDP Incoming file transfers may not work.
AOL Instant Messenger UDP Audio and video communication may not work.
Yahoo! Messenger UDP Audio and video communication may not work.
VOIP (Telephone) Inbound calls might not be received using some VOIP services.
External DNS servers TCP/UDP 53 Please use internal DNS servers (automatic configuration)
File and printer sharing TCP/UDP 137-139, 445 Only access to Kent file servers is allowed

* The list above is not exhaustive. Other services may be restricted because they share a common port with the services above.
