Get started
Ensure your laptop has current anti-virus software and the latest security updates before connecting.
What you need
Laptop computer
- A laptop capable of connecting to wireless Internet with these technologies as a minimum requirement (802.11b, with PEAP, MSCHAPv2, and WPA). If bought in the last 3-4 years it should be ok. If not, you need to either buy a wireless adapter/card that supports the minimum requirements; or buy a laptop with wireless capability built in.
- A supported operating system: Windows 7, Vista, XP or Mac OS 10.4 and above are supported with printed user guides and support from helpdesk staff. You are welcome to try connecting with other operating systems (to work, they need to support JANET Roaming Service/eduroam wireless connections).
- Security software and updates installed
Mobile device
A mobile device that supports WPA Enterprise authentication. Connection advice: the Mobile Devices forum.
iPhone users
If you have installed an application called PDA Net on your iPhone, you need to turn it off or remove it from your phone before connecting to the Kent network. If it is not turned off or removed, it prevents others from connecting to the wireless service, and may result in your connection being terminated at any time without notice.
Wireless zones
Wireless zones are found in the social and teaching areas of most buildings on campus at Canterbury and Medway, and in the Tonbridge Centre.
Internet connection sharing
Internet connection sharing must be turned off before you connect your device to Kent (instructions for doing this are given in setup document below). If it is not turned off, it prevents others from connecting to the wireless service, and may result in your connection being terminated at any time without notice.

About the service
Eduroam is the wireless network identification for the JANET Roaming Service (JRS), our standard wireless service on campus. Please don't try to connect to any other signal.
If you get a poor signal in some locations, this may due to the structure of the building.
Please report any reception difficulties to Helpdesk
