Students with families

Canterbury and Medway offer great environments for families, with a wide range of child-friendly facilities and a perfect mix of city, coast and countryside. If you are planning to bring your family with you when you study, this page has links to useful information including accommodation, schooling and healthcare.

We strongly advise new students with children to travel to Kent alone, in advance of starting their course, to make all the arrangements for housing and schooling and to get a sense of the local area, before bringing their families to join them. Deciding where to live may be affected by a range of factors including the proximity to schools and other family-focused services.

Many current Kent students with families are happy to pass on their knowledge to new arrivals, while other more formal support is available through our Graduate School. Our Postgraduate International Families Network also gives student parents the opportunity to connect and socialise with other families and to receive notifications of upcoming events.

Useful websites include the University's Student Immigration site, Kent Union's Advice Centre, the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) and GOV.UK.

Accommodation

The University does not have accommodation suitable for families. The sections below provide links to useful sites.

Finding off-campus accommodation

We would recommend that any students looking for off-campus accommodation in Canterbury use the Home Stamp website. For students seeking off-campus accommodation in Medway, we recommend that you read the housing guide prepared by Kent Hospitality and Kent Union.

When searching online for accommodation, use postcode CT1 for central Canterbury and postcode CT2 for the University campus. The postcode for the Medway area is ME7.

Halal food
The Essentials on-campus shop stocks a selection of halal snacks, rolls and kebabs. The canteen in Rutherford College aims to ensure that all the chicken served in its meals is halal. There are always vegetarian options available in the catering outlets on campus.

Local supermarkets including Tescos, Asdas and Sainsburys may also stock Halal foods. Day Day which is located on Sturry Road in Canterbury has a good selection of Halal products. If you have any further quesitons please contact the University of Kent Islamic Society.

Oriental food
Thais ‘R’ Us Oriental Grocers is located on St Dunstan’s Street, just ten minutes bus ride from the Canterbury Campus. It is Kent’s first wholesale distribution centre of authentic Thai and oriental food products. Thais ‘R’ Us is open seven days a week.

The Asia Market is located in Northgate. It also stocks a wide selection of Asian foods. For directions, click here.

Kosher food
On campus, there are always vegetarian options available in the catering outlets. The Essentials shop also stocks a selection of kosher foods, including sandwiches.

Off campus, the Jewish Society can help a student order kosher foods from London. However, students are required to have a freezer and this is not always easy. Some of the larger supermarkets stock kosher options. The Jewish Society has also recommended this site which allows students to find certified kosher restaurants in London and the surrounding area.

International Families Network

The University of Kent's Postgraduate International Families Network is a platform to help support international students who have families and spouses joining them in the UK during the course of their postgraduate study at the University.

Established by the Graduate School and the International Recruitment team to enhance the international student experience for student parents, the group allows you to connect and socialise with other families and to receive notifications of upcoming events.

Each academic term we will be holding an informal lunchtime gathering to provide an opportunity for members of the group (students, partners and children) to meet together on campus.

Email Jo Addison at graduateschool@kent.ac.uk to join the Network mailing list and receive notifications of upcoming events. You can also join our Postgraduate International Families Network Facebook group.

Spiritual and religious needs

We have a Chaplaincy team at Kent which is both ecumenical and multi-faith. We have two full-time chaplains (Anglican and Catholic) and several part-time members who serve all the main Christian denominations as well as the Buddhist, Islamic, Hindu, Sikh and Jewish faith communities.

There is an attractive small chapel in Eliot College on the Canterbury campus which is regularly used for worship and is open to everybody for quiet prayer and meditation.

Muslim students at the Medway campus are able to meet for prayer in the Rochester building and there is a chaplain who can arrange introductions to local places of worship and offer spiritual advice to all students.
