  • Brief description:

    Material relating to Dion Boucicault's death, burial, and last will, including

    item 1 -- photocopy of the page of the burial register on which Dion Boucicault's death is listed, giving his age, place of residence, date and cause of death, and place of burial; it is not indicated which parish of New York the register covers;

    item 2 -- transcript of Dion Boucicault's last will, dated 17th of March 1887;

    item 3 -- photocopy of an obituary of Dion Boucicault in Spirit of the Times, Sept. 27, 1890, which points out similarities between Boucicault and Shakespeare, possibly by Stephen Fiske;

    item 4 -- an obituary of Dion Boucicault in the Illustrated London News, Sept. 27, 1890, including two portraits, wood engravings based on a photograph of Boucicault by the London Stereoscopic Company and on the photograph of Boucicault as the Shaughraun by Jos Maria Mora;

    item 5 -- excerpts from 2 articles on Dion Boucicault, one an obituary from the Pall Mall Gazette, Sept. 19, 1890; the other from the Athenaeum, November 23, 1844; this is accompanied by transcipt of a letter to "Ted" (probably Theodore Cloak), in which the quote from the Pall Mall Gazette is included; the transcipts are on the back of a letter from a correspondent at Mount Holyoke College in response to an enquiry about sketches of Boucicault which Christopher Calthrop seems to believe are by (William Schwenck) Gilbert; the correspondent also mentions seeing an original prompt book of LONDON ASSURANCE in Boucicault's hand for sale, but does not know who bought the item;

    item 6 -- 2 letters from the life claims superintendents of two life insurance companies, apparently in response to enquiries by Christopher Calthrop as to whether Dion Boucicault had any insurance policies with them; neither company can find any records, but one says that Dion Boucicault Jr. had had policies with them;

    item 7 -- a "Partial Map of Mount Hope Cemetery, Westchester Co(unty), New York", where Boucicault's third wife, Josephine Louise, had his remains moved soon after his death and where they are both buried; accompanied by a note which indicates the location of the grave and by a ferry timetable.
