Reference management software

Reference management software enables you to build a personal bibliographic database that holds each book, book chapter, journal article, or any other type of material that you have read or used as part of your study and research.

You can download records for material that you have read from online searches and use the software to insert selected references into Word documents. The software will correctly format citations and the bibliography according to a chosen style.

Recommended software:

  • RefWorks: web-based reference management software, ideal for wireless networking, use in study bedrooms, and working off-campus.
    Log into RefWorks

All of the main citation styles in use by departments at the University of Kent are available for selection from RefWorks.

Proposed phasing out of EndNote

  • EndNote: standalone reference management software installed on all University student and staff managed desktop PCs.

We are currently consulting users of Endnote reference management software, which is installed on university student and staff PCs.

If our Endnote licence is not renewed, existing users will be able to continue using the version currently installed.

Migrating your references to RefWorks

If you are an Endnote user you can use these instructions to migrate your references from Endnote to Refworks.

If you need help migrating to RefWorks or have any concerns about the proposed phasing out of EndNote, please email referencemanagement@kent.ac.uk.
