About

Sarah Brown joined the University of Kent in 2014, having previously worked in front line social work for eleven years and as an Associate Lecturer for the Open University. She is also an independent Practice Educator and a Family Group Conference Coordinator.

Sarah's practice-based social work experience has been in youth offending, specialising in restorative justice, risk assessment, working with young people who sexually harm and coordinating Family Group Conferences.

Sarah has an MA from Cardiff University, stage 2 of the Practice Educator Professionals Standards (PEPS), PGCHE and is a Senior Fellow. 

Research interests

Sarah's interests include youth justice, theory to practice, developing communication skills in students, practice education and Family Group Conferences. For her MA, Sarah researched gender disparities in sentencing, using Cardiff Youth Offending team as a case study.

Sarah is the Vice-Chair of a Special Interest group on Family Group Conferences which promotes this empowering approach in social work. 

Teaching

Sarah teaches modules on the social work programmes focussing primarily in social work theory and how that is applied in practice.
