Teaching and assessment

The programme involves a taught and a project component. The taught programme is assessed by a mixture of coursework assignments throughout the year, and by examinations in May and June. Once these are completed, you work full time on the Dissertation.

Our MSc Management includes 2 days a week of teaching, which is very beneficial for those in employment or with other commitments.

Programme aims

• The programme aims to:
• Provide a pre-experience Master’s programme for students wishing to pursue a career in business and management.
• Educate individuals as managers and business specialists and thus improve the quality of management as a profession.
• Provide preparation for and/or development of a career in business and management by developing skills at a professional or equivalent level, or as preparation for research or further study in the area.
• Add value to first degrees by developing in individuals an integrated and critically aware understanding of management and organisations and assist them in taking effective roles within management.
• Develop students’ knowledge and understanding of organisations, the external context in which they operate and how they are managed.
• Develop the ability of individuals to critically apply key marketing and management theories in a range of different contexts, through the development of cognitive, critical and intellectual skills, research skills and relevant personal and interpersonal skills.
• Enhance the development of lifelong learning skills to foster individuals’ abilities to be able to work with self-direction and originality and to contribute to business and society at large.
• Bring the scholarly and critical insights of the Social Sciences to bear on the subjects, activities and processes associated with the management of organisations.
• Provide teaching and learning opportunities that are informed by high quality research and scholarship, from within the Kent Business School and elsewhere.
• Build on the close ties of the University with European institutions.
• Support sustainable national and regional economic success via the development of opportunities offered by the programme, including those related to an understanding of international business practices.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

You will gain knowledge and understanding of: 

• Internal aspects functions and processes of organizations; the impact of external contextual forces on organisations including: legal systems; ethical, economic, environmental, social and technological change issues; international developments; corporate governance with their effects at local, national and global levels upon the strategy, behaviour, management and sustainability of organisations and their environment (SB3.2, SB3.7, SB3.9).
• Markets and customers: the development and operation of markets for resources, goods and services; customer expectations; service and orientation. (SB3.2, SB3.7, SB3.9).
• The financing of the business enterprise or other forms of organisations; sources, uses and management of finance; use of accounting for managerial and financial reporting applications. (SB3.2, SB3.7, SB3.9).
• The change management process and change planning within organisations, leadership and change within organisations. (SB3.2, SB3.7, SB3.9).
• The uses and limitations of a range of research methods/techniques; the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, synthesis and reporting, and an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses for providing information and evaluating options in an uncertain organisational environment. (SB3.7, SB3.9; SB3.12).
• The development, management and exploitation of information systems and their impact on organisations. (SB3.2, SB3.7, SB3.9).
• The comprehension and use of relevant communications for application in business and management, including the use of digital tools. (SB3.2, SB3.7, SB3.9).
• The development and implementation of appropriate strategies within a changing environment, strategic risk management and issues of compliance. (SB3.2, SB3.7, SB3.9).
• A range of contemporary and pervasive issues which may change over time. Illustrative examples include: innovation, creativity, entrepreneurial - and entrepreneurial behaviour and enterprise development, sustainability, business ethics, values and norms, globalisation. (SB3.2, SB3.7, SB3.9).

Intellectual skills

You will gain the following intellectual skills:

• Critical thinking and creativity; managing creative processes in self and others; organising thoughts; analysis, synthesis, critical appraisal. This includes the capability to identify assumptions, evaluate statements in terms of evidence, detect false logic or reasoning, identify implicit values, define terms adequately and generalise appropriately. (SB3.8, SB3.9).
•  Robust theoretical grounding in the broad area of business and management, development of a range of transferable skills as well as demonstrate a systematic understanding of ability to select, organise, develop and synthesise complex material.(SB3.9, SB 3.10).
• Ability to assemble, analysis and synthesise relevant business information to informdecision-making: establish criteria, using appropriate decision-making techniques including identifying, formulating and solving business problems. (SB3.9; SB 3.12).
• Ability to plan, work and study independently and to use resources in a way which reflects best current practice and anticipated future practice; organise thoughts, analyse, synthesise and critically appraise. (SB3.9).
• Integrative capability to communicate and co-ordinate or eventually lead a team of multifunctional specialists; ability to recognise and use individuals' contributions in group processes and to negotiate and persuade or influence others; team selection, delegation, development and management. (SB5.1, SB3.9).
• Plan, structure, and produce a business report. (SB3.9).

Subject-specific skills

You gain subject-specific skills in:

• Develop an ability to design and interpret research into business and management issues. (SB3.9).
• Develop an ability to understand the nature and scope of businesses operations and attributes of business performance. (SB3.9).
• Demonstrate an ability to manage their workload, solve problems, make quality decisions and manage time effectively. (SB5.1, SB3.9).
• Develop new sets of skills in areas such as people management, strategic management, global business, marketing communication, leadership, performance management and time management skills. (SB3.9).
• Demonstrate an ability to understand the international and ethical dimension to business operations. (SB5.1; SB3.9).

• Develop numeracy and analytical skills to be able to address business and management issues. (SB3.9).

Kent Business School at Medway benefits from a range of new facilities. The Sail and Colour Loft features six seminar rooms, a group learning room, a computer suite, quiet and general study areas, social spaces and a special reference collection of core text books. The Sibson Building at Canterbury is a vibrant new campus destination. The state-of-the-art building includes dedicated postgraduate and IT suites, academic and research workspaces, three lecture theatres and social learning spaces.

Each postgraduate student is assigned a specific member of academic staff who acts as your first point of contact throughout your studies. There is a lively postgraduate community at the School, with plenty of space to relax and interact with your fellow students and our academic staff.
