We are constantly striving for greater collaboration and research capability, and this has resulted in a significant increase in staff numbers, PhD awards, high-quality laboratory space, outputs and income. An intentional focus on research themes, rather than a rigid group structure, allows colleagues to be represented in more than one area, thereby encouraging collaboration and cross-disciplinary endeavour. Moreover, cogent (often multidisciplinary) groups with common interests consisting of more than one academic are encouraged.
Within our collaborative research community, the School offers an inspiring environment where researchers at all levels can produce their best work.
An impressive 93% of our active research staff submitted to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework and 88% of this research was classed as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'.
Our research is focussed on biological processes at the molecular and cellular level and spans the disciplines of biochemistry, genetics, biotechnology and biomedical research. The five main research themes within the School are:
Investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the ageing process
Building on School strengths in both cell biology and molecular protein science
Comprised of several like-minded academics dedicated to the study of reproduction in all its forms
Understanding the molecular basis of fertility, congenital malformation, cancer and evolution
A South East Asia Research Collaboration (SEARC)
GKM works with businesses in the food and drink industry; enhancing products in our BioTech Hub
Members of the group work closely with a wide range of industrial partners in the IB area
Researching virulence, pathogenicity and drug resistance in a wide variety of human pathogens
Our researchers regularly collaborate with medical companies and clinicians. In recent times, this work has contributed to improvements in drug discovery, diagnosis, treatment and aftercare for a wide range of medical conditions, such as cancer, infertility and infection.
Biopharmaceutical manufacturers have also applied our research to create new diagnostics, novel medications and complex, high-value products.
The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessed the impact of our research and judged that over 85% was world-leading or internationally excellent.
We offer Biosciences research degrees at Master's level and PhD. With academic expertise across a range of fields, find a project to suit you and help build a better tomorrow. Find out more about our postgraduate courses.
