The Kent School of Architecture and Planning (KSAP) has appointed Steve Quartermain CBE as its Honorary Professor of Practice in Planning.

The newly retired Chief Planner of the UK Government has accepted the professorship from KSAP, which will last until 2025. At Kent he will have a strategic role and become part of the project team developing the Master of Arts in Planning & Resilience. This appointment strengthens KSAP’s expertise and offering for current and prospective students.

Steve Quartermain recently retired from the position of Chief Planner at the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government after 12 years in the role. He was responsible for the transformation of the UK planning system, bringing forward the National Planning Policy Framework. He returns to the county of Kent having spent time as a Planning Officer in Dartford early on in his career.

Professor Samer Bagaeen, KSAP’s Professor of Planning, said: ‘Steve’s presence and contribution to the ongoing development and accreditation of the programme will be a huge asset to the School, to the University and to Kent as the profession changes and adapts to the new reality in a post COVID-19 world.’

Steve Quartermain said: ‘I am delighted and indeed honoured to accept this role at the University of Kent. As a champion of the planning profession I believe that it is important to invest time in engaging with, and supporting the development of the planners of the future and I hope that I can add value and assist the University in this aim.’
