You have access to a large newspaper collection. Most are available online, with some in print and some on microfilm.

We keep adding new digital newspaper archives, which give you access to primary sources and open up your research like never before!

  • Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers (Library of Congress): search hundreds of full text newspapers from 1860-1922; the site also has information about American newspapers from 1690 onwards
  • Eighteenth Century Journals Portal: portal to newspapers and periodicals c1685-1835, covering all aspects of 18th-century social, political and literary life
  • JISC Media Hub: video, images and sound resources from many different collections, allowing you to cross-search and explore TV news, documentary films, still images and classical music
  • News on Screen (from BUFVC): database of British newsreel and cinemagazine production from 1910 to 1983, with over 180,000 records and a large collection of digitised documents
  • Newsplan London and the South East: full, bibliographical records and locations of local newspaper titles, dating from 1717 onwards

Nexis

Nexis is an excellent source for online full text UK newspapers as well as other news sources world wide.

Several "group files" allow you to cross search on a number of titles. These groups include UK nationals (16 full text newspapers) and UK broadsheets.

With Nexis you can also access:

  • the Financial Times, with an archive going back to 1982
  • many non-UK newspapers, particularly from North America, Australasia and other English speaking areas
  • news sources from European countries in their original languages
  • business and company information worldwide

Many sites offer links to individual newspapers or maintain collections of news sources, usually organised by continent and then country. The list below contains some major resources. Please note:

  • most online versions are only partial; many give only the main stories
  • not all are free: some want you to register or pay for a subscription
  • we subscribe to Nexis, which includes many international newspapers (alternative access via Federation)
