Per Laleng is a graduate of the University of Kent where he obtained a degree in English & French Law. He obtained an MPhil in Social and Political Theory from the University of Cambridge and was called to the Bar in 1994. After a brief spell lecturing at Kent, he spent eight years at the personal injury Bar in Liverpool. Whilst at the Bar, he specialized in industrial disease litigation but undertook a wide variety of work ranging across road traffic accidents, clinical negligence, employer’s liability (particularly in relation to asbestos-exposure) and other forms of public liability.
Since returning to the University in 2005, he has chiefly taught within the Law of Obligations. He has convened the Law of Tort for many years and convenes Critical & Legal Reasoning. He was Director of Moots between 2008 and 2019. He was an Academic Fellow at Inner Temple between 2012-15 and remains an Associate Academic Fellow. He is a member of Gray’s Inn. He was Director of Covid safety in the Law School during the academic year 2020-21.
His research has focused on the law of tort, in particular the question of causation in toxic tort cases. This includes the issue of the legal interpretation of statistical evidence (such as epidemiological evidence) in the proof of individual causation. Related interests in quantitative methods and legal reasoning have prompted a shift in focus towards artificial intelligence and the law.
Undergraduate
Mr Laleng spent eight years practising as a barrister specialising in personal injury law. As such, Mr Laleng is happy to supervise candidates who wish to research in practice-related areas of (civil) law. He will consider supervision within areas related to his research interests as set out above.
Mr Laleng is an Associate Academic Fellow of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple. He is an editor at Pro-VIDE law.
