About

Dr Alexander Damianos is lecturer in property law and environmental law at the University of Kent Law School. He has a PhD in law from the London School of Economics, where he also completed an MSc in Law, Anthropology & Society; and a BA in Critical & Visual Studies from Pratt Institute, New York.

Research interests

Alexander’s research examines how scientific and legal expertise co-produce normative authority under conditions of climate crisis. He is the author of Science, Politics and the Anthropocene Working Group: What was the Anthropocene? (2025) published by Routledge. This book presents the first ethnographic study of the team of geologists who, between 2009 and 2024, sought to formalise the Anthropocene as a geoscientific fact. His current research concerns the use of remote sensing technologies and Artificial Intelligence in climate change mitigation, ranging from nonhuman legal personhood, to claims of translatability between humans and animals. His writings appear in journals including Social Studies of Science, Law & Critique, Law, Culture & Humanities, and Global Sustainability.

In 2025-2026, Alexander is a “selected young scientist” of the Creative Europe program S+T+ARTS Studiotopia. As part of this year long fellowship, he has been paired with the architectural office Territorial Agency to deliver an exhibition as part of the Ars Electronica Festival in September, 2026. As part of the Ars Electronica Festival 2025, Alexander organised the Earth is a Sensorium symposium.

Alexander is an associate research fellow of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, where he is leading the Environmental Legal Humanities Hub.

In 2026, Alexander is a visiting research fellow at the Centre of Excellence for Anthropocene History at KTH, Stockholm.
