About

Philip Chan joined the Kent Business School in September 2021 as a Senior Lecturer in the accounting group. He obtained his Master of Philosophy degree in Accounting and Bachelor of Economics and Social Studies degree in Accounting from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth where he graduated with first class honours.

He started his career as an auditor with Buzzacott & Co in London and Ernst and Young in Hong Kong. He then moved on to undertake various management positions in multinational companies with experience in accounting and financial control in Hong Kong, United Kingdom and United States. He is currently a fellow member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA). He was the examiner of various accounting and governance professional bodies examinations in Hong Kong.

Prior to joining the Kent Business School, he worked at School of Accounting and Finance under the Faculty of Business in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University over 15 years where he was a teaching fellow in accounting and the programme leader of BBA (Hons) in Accountancy. He had awarded three teaching prizes from the School and Faculty in 2012, 2016 and 2020 respectively. He is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

His research focuses primarily on accounting education. He has published an auditing paper in a reputable accounting journal.

Research interests

Philip's research primarily focuses on peer instruction and its learning effectiveness on accounting education.    

Teaching

Philip has more than 20 years’ experiences teaching financial reporting at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The Open University of Hong Kong. At Kent Business School he also teaches financial accounting.  

Supervision

Philip does not supervise PhD students.

Professional

Philip is a qualified accountant with fellow membership in both ACCA and HKICPA and he had 10 years’ accounting and financial control experiences in Hong Kong, United Kingdom and United States.
