Political ties and new venture performance in emerging markets.
Literature has extensively examined how new ventures play a critical role in economic growth through their innovative capabilities and their main source of new jobs in emerging markets. Studies on new venture performance suggest that new ventures face certain difficulties and a greater likelihood of failure. Based on a new venture’s liability of newness, the failure rates are highest during the first years of new ventures’ life cycle due to their limited resources, but it declines as the ventures age.
Research suggests that managers can affect new venture performance by offering greater resources for new ventures to leverage their survival. This can be done by engaging in a non-market strategy using ties with a political and governmental actor to reduce uncertainty and shape its environment. Political ties help new ventures in acquiring unique resources, enhancing innovative capabilities, and maintaining their legitimacy in a weak and inefficient environment. However, existing literature has investigated the association between political ties and performance in large firms, little is known about new venture performance in emerging markets. Thus, it limits theoretical generalizability and provides a gap in the existing literature).
