Single language pathway

Study one language and graduate with a BA (Hons) in Modern Languages with proficiency in one language: French, German, Italian or Spanish.

Dual language pathway

Study two languages and graduate with BA (Hons) in Modern Languages with proficiency in two languages: any combination including French, German, Italian or Spanish.

Modern Languages and Management

Modern and Languages and Management places employability at its heart. Study a language alongside management, preparing you to live and work in tomorrow's world.  

Routes into languages

Sample pathway A: single language

Stage 1
You will study core written and oral modules of your chosen language, plus you can select from a variety of modules covering areas such as cultural, literary and linguistics topics. You can also study modules from other disciplines such as Politics and History. You will choose these modules according to your career aspirations – we offer routes in cultural production, societies and politics, business cultures and teaching languages, and you will be able to experiment with different routes

Stage 2
You will study core written and oral modules of the language, plus you can select from a variety of modules covering areas such as cultural, literary and linguistics topics. You can also study modules from other disciplines outside of Modern Languages such as Politics and History. You will choose these modules according to your career aspirations – we offer routes in cultural production, societies and politics, business cultures and teaching languages, and you will be able to experiment with different routes.

Year abroad
If you choose to spend a Year Abroad, this will be spent in a country where your target language is spoken either:

  • on a work placement
  • studying at a university
  • in a school working as a language assistant

Stage 3 (final year)
You will study final year core written and oral modules of the language, plus you can select from a variety of modules covering cultural, literary and linguistic aspects of the language. You can also study modules from other subjects. Final year modules are about getting you career-ready. You will choose them according to your career route – and we will prepare you for the job market accordingly.

Sample pathway B: two languages

Study two languages and graduate with BA (Hons) in Modern Languages with proficiency in two languages.

Stage 1
Your study will be divided 50/50 between two languages and will include for both first year core written and oral modules of the languages, plus you can select from a variety of modules covering cultural, literary and linguistic aspects of the target languages. You will choose these modules according to your career aspirations – we offer routes in cultural production, societies and politics, business cultures and teaching languages, and you will be able to experiment with different routes.

Stage 2
Your study will be divided 50/50 between two languages and will include for both second year core written and oral modules of the languages, plus you can select from a variety of modules covering cultural, literary and linguistic aspects of the languages. You will choose these modules according to your career aspirations – we offer routes in cultural production, societies and politics, business cultures and teaching languages, and you will be able to experiment with different routes.

Year abroad

If you choose to take a Year Abroad, it will be split between two countries in which your target languages are spoken, either:

  • on a work placement
  • studying at a university
  • in a school working as a language assistant

Stage 3 (final year)
Your study will be divided 50/50 between two languages and will include for core written and oral modules of the languages, plus you can select from a variety of modules covering cultural, literary and linguistic aspects of the languages. You will choose them according to your career route – and we will prepare you for the job market accordingly.

You can also study a third language over the course of three years, take an extra module in in a language at any stage or you can even take a full year in a third language.
