Modern Languages and Linguistics at Kent was ranked 3rd in the UK in the Research Excellence Framework, and was the highest score the UK for research in modern languages.

The Department of Modern Languages comprises of five subject areas: French, German, Hispanic Studies, Italian and European Studies. We offer a range undergraduate degree programmes in these areas, both as single honours or combined with other or subjects for joint honours degrees programmes. Our language-based programmes also provide the opportunity to study or work abroad for a year. Our ideal location, as the closest UK university city to mainland Europe, with its excellent connections, enable us to maintain close links with other countries. Our postgraduate programmes offered at both our Canterbury and Paris offer more specialist study supported by academics with track records in world-leading research.

Languages matter, whether communicating culture, politics or economics. The programmes offered by Kent strengthen our cross-cultural understanding, and contribute to Kent’s status as ‘the UK’s European University’.
