English Language & Linguistics was ranked 9th in the UK in the most recent National Student Survey (2014), with 93% student satisfaction. The Department was also part of Kent's REF2014 submission to Modern Languages and Linguistics that was ranked 3rd in the UK, with 85% of its research graded world-leading or internationally excellent.
Linguistics, the scientific study of language, seeks to understand how languages are structured, used and acquired. What structural elements do languages have in common and in what ways do they differ? Are humans genetically predisposed to learn language?
