Dr Aaron Berko obtained a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Kent in 2002 and remained at Kent to study for a Master’s degree in Chemistry in 2003, supervised by Professor Michael Went. He worked on novel functionalised thiamacrocycles for possible applications in cancer diagnosis. Aaron went on to Canterbury Christ Church University and completed a teaching qualification in 2004.
After teaching in secondary schools for three years, Aaron returned to the University of Kent in 2007 to study for a PhD in Materials Chemistry, supervised by Professor Alan Chadwick. During his PhD he worked on the Tudor warship Mary Rose, studying the effects of iron and sulphur species on the ship’s timbers and the use of X-ray techniques and possible chemical remediation processes to stop the degradation of the wood structures by these species.
Aaron also carried out EXAFS analysis for the Alistore group working on battery materials. This involved collecting and analysing data during beam time allocations at the Diamond Light Source and the now-closed Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS) at the Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire. He joined the School of Chemistry and Forensic Science at the University of Kent in 2011 as a Specialist Associate Lecturer and was appointed a Lecturer in 2014 and Senior Lecturer in 2023.
