Academic career

David is also a Senior Lecturer in Ancient History within the School of European Cultures and Languages.

Completing his MA in Ancient History at Oxford, David joined the University in 1976, with his research and teaching interests in ancient Greek and Roman history and particularly in the late Roman Republic and the early Empire, with expert knowledge of Roman banking and fiscal policy. David was appointed Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor in 2006, and whilst this is now his main role in the University, he still continues with some undergraduate teaching.

Responsibilities include institutional planning, overall academic provision of the university, including student recruitment and the University’s engagements with schools and colleges in Kent and Medway, Medway Campus, KentHealth and International Development

David Nightingale is also the Equality and Diversity Champion for Race and Ethnicity.

He was formerly Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
