University researchers serve up a pint of science in Medway pubs

As part of the world’s largest festival of public science, University researchers will be appearing in Medway pubs to share their knowledge and expertise on 14 and 16 May 2018.

It is part of the international Pint of Science festival that sees thousands of scientists simultaneously standing up in more than 100 cities across 12 countries to tell the public about their work.

In Medway, the first event takes place on Monday 14 May in The Good Intent, John Street, Rochester, where the theme for the night will be Coping with brain dysfunction and Computers for creativity.

The talk This conversation is electric, by Fern Rodgers, from the School of Psychology, will look at speech and language after brain injury, while Anna Ferrusola-Pastrana, School of Sport and Exercise Sciences will talk on Tackling Parkinson’s Disease with exercise. Then Anna Jordanous, School of Computing (Medway) will consider the science of creativity and whether computers can actually be creative.

On Wednesday 16 May at the Northern Seaman, in High Street, Rochester, the theme of the evening will be Community services, Crime & punishment and Global health.

Dr Ellie Jupp, of the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research, will have a talk entitled Save Our Sure Starts – Austerity and children’s services, while Dr Lauren Ware, of the University’s School of European Culture and Languages, will ask Should prisons become pain factories? and Dr Jeremy Rossman, of the School of Biosciences, will talk about Outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics: The 100thanniversary of the Great Influenza Pandemic.

All the events are due to run from 19.00 to 22.00, with doors opening at 18.30.
