Applications open to study degree level apprenticeships for route into Civil Service careers

Applications for the Government Economic Service Degree Apprenticeship programme have been extended to 4 February.

This programme is an opportunity for those eager to study and obtain a BSc Economics Degree, gain valuable work experience as an economist, earn a salary and become a professional economist.

The Professional Economist Degree Apprenticeship, is part of a continued partnership between the Government Economic Service (GES) with the University’s School of Economics  and Centre for Higher and Degree Apprenticeships.

The programme is designed to create new routes into careers in the Civil Service and a very wide range of other employers of economics graduates. Alongside central government, apprentices might alternatively work in: local government; the quasi-governmental regulatory bodies; banking and financial sectors; private industry and consultancy companies; and third sector organisations. The programme is especially suited to those eager to work at the heart of high profile and busy organisations whilst they are studying and making a real difference to the decisions that shape all our futures.

Applications for this programme must be made through an employer and the GES recruitment campaign is currently open for applications. A range of central government departments will provide apprenticeships through the GES Degree Apprenticeship Programme (GES-DAP), which will offer students a starting salary of approximately £22k in London and a minimum of £20k nationally. The GES-DAP has vacancies nationwide including in Manchester, Bristol, Leeds, Sheffield, London and York.

There are no tuition fees as the apprenticeship is fully funded and apprentices are guaranteed that 20% of work time will be spent on university-based education, which will be closely related to the job.

With no age limitations, the programme is open to candidates with GCSE Maths & English Language at grade B (6) or above and 96 UCAS points.

Once the apprenticeship has been successfully completed, apprentices will have received four years work experience, an economics degree and, for some, the offer of a permanent job in the Government Economic Service.

Applications will close on 4 February 2020 at 23:55pm.
