Overview

This module aims to develop an advanced understanding of drug effects in humans; in particular how the drug can influence the natural physiological processes together with the evaluation of the adverse drug effects. Furthermore, this module will develop an advanced understanding of the mechanism of the drug in terms of treating a particular disorder, including infection and inflammation, gastrointestinal system nervous system, cardiorespiratory and renal systems, blood and neoplastic disease and endocrine system and metabolic disorders.

Written assessment (2,000 words) – 40%
3 hour Examination – 60%

Learning outcomes

The intended subject specific learning outcomes.
On successfully completing the module students will be able to:
Understand the clinical pharmacology of the principal drugs used to treat infection and inflammation.
Demonstrate an understanding of heart physiology in the context of cardiovascular pharmacology.
Describe and define the anatomy of respiratory system and demonstrate the understanding of the drug treatment for respiratory conditions.
Clinically evaluate the current drug treatment for gastrointestinal disorders.
Explain the clinical use and application of pro-coagulant and anti-coagulant drugs.
Understand antineoplastic therapy treatment in blood cancer.

On successfully completing the module students will be able to:
Develop and demonstrate an ability to analyse, evaluate and correctly interpret data.
Present and communicate data effectively and confidently.
Obtain and use information from a variety of sources as part of self-directed learning.
