Learn about light from leading scientists at Kent

Members of the Applied Optics Group in free Canterbury city centre public event (14 March) on light and optical technologies.

To celebrate the International Year of Light & Light-based Technologies, scientists from the University’s Applied Optics Group will be available to discuss their work during a free informal drop-in event at Canterbury’s Beaney House of Art & Knowledge between 10am-3pm on Saturday 14 March.

There will also be hands on activities involving models and demonstration kits to explore image formation in the human eye and in modern cameras.

Visitors to Light Up Your Life will have the opportunity to speak with: Professor Adrian Podoleanu, Head of the Applied Optics Group; Dr George Dobre, lecturer in applied optics; and researcher Dr Adrian Bradu. PhD students from the Group will also attend the event.

Professor Podoleanu and his colleagues from the Group, which is based within the School of Physical Sciences, have long been involved at the forefront of global developments and cutting-edge research on high resolution non-invasive optical imaging methods, advanced microscopy and infrared imaging, as well as the devices to make these technologies evolve e.g. specialised lasers and detection systems. They have worked with the likes of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary on technologies for imaging the eye and with Northwick Park Hospital in London on technologies for imaging the vocal chords.

As well as learning about their specific work with these clinics, visitors will also have the opportunity to learn how optical coherence tomography, a high resolution imaging technology developed by the Group, has advanced the fields of ophthalmology, endoscopy, microscopy of bio-samples and art conservation.

The International Year of Light & Light-based Technologies is a UN General Assembly proclaimed global initiative that aims to highlight the importance of light and optical technologies in life today and the future, as well as for the development of society.
