Casual staff

Being a casual staff member at Kent Sport while you are studying is a great way to learn valuable skills and develop experience within a working environment. See Graduate Goals website. The benefits for students include:

Fitness Instructor

Fitness Instructor

Role: Fitness Instructor

Department: Health, Fitness and Studio

Line Manager/Contact: Jeni Dexter – j.dexter@kent.ac.uk 

Location: Sports Centre - Canterbury Campus

Qualifications or Experience required: Level 2 Fitness Certificate preferable

Rate of Pay: NMW or NLW dependant on age (£7.05-£9.41per hour)

Shift Times/Hours Available: Predominantly Evenings (1700-2200) and Weekends (0900-1700) 

Key accountabilities, duties and expectations:

  • Ensure optimal usage of the health, fitness facilities by supporting daily operations and the departments’ strategy of engaging all students in physical activity.
  • Facilitate health and fitness appointment services ensuring all clients receive a qualified, courteous, and professional service at all times.
  • Support the University’s commitment to student and staff wellbeing along with nurturing positive mental health by ensuring inclusive access to health, fitness and studio facilities and services.

Personal Trainer

Role: Personal Trainer

Department: Health, Fitness and Studio

Line Manager/Contact: Jeni Dexter – j.dexter@kent.ac.uk 

Location: Sports Centre - Canterbury Campus

Qualifications or Experience required: Level 3 Personal Training Qualification/Certificate

Rate of Pay: Grade 7 (£22.55 per hour). PT Sessions are 60 mins long

Shift Times/Hours Available: All Hours - Availability required to match client requests 


Key accountabilities, duties and expectations:

  • To plan, demonstrate and prescribe effective and professional Personal Training sessions for a variety of clients
  • To understand multiple health and fitness objectives alongside contraindications and match exercise prescription accordingly
  • To support the promotion of the Personal Training service and complete supplementary administration as required

Studio Instructor

Role: Studio Instructor

Department: Health, Fitness and Studio

Line Manager/Contact: Jeni Dexter – j.dexter@kent.ac.uk 

Location: Sports Centre - Canterbury Campus

Qualifications or Experience required: Qualified Group Exercise Certificates essential 

Rate of Pay: Grade 6-8 dependant on Class Genre (£17.76-£26.04 per hour)

Shift Times/Hours Available: Between 1-4 classes per week with availability to cover absence. Lunchtimes / Evenings / Weekends as per current Timetable 


Key accountabilities, duties and expectations:

  • Plan, lead and deliver effective face-to-face Group Exercise classes for our student and staff membership cohort. 
  • Group Exercise sessions range from 30 minutes to 1 hour and from holistic to high intensity and energy formats.
  • We are specifically looking for certified Instructors with experience of teaching Yoga, Pilates, Dance genres, Les Mills and other franchised formats as well as those that have developed their own popular styles and formats.

Qualifications or Experience required: Qualification not required

Rate of Pay: 

  • 5 aside - £12.00 a game
  • 11 aside (Qualified) – £40.00 a game
  • 11 aside (Unqualified) - £28.00 a game



Shift Times/Hours Available: 

  • Wednesdays 12:00 – 22:00
  • Thursdays 19:00 - 20:00 
  • Saturdays 13:00 – 19:00

Volunteering and work experience

Kent Sport is a busy and diverse department that services and promotes many of the varied sporting and wellbeing activities on campus. University of Kent students can earn employability points for volunteering for a certain amount of time. Volunteering is currently only open to University of Kent students. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to join us in a variety of roles, including:

  • Photography and videography
  • Blogging and social media
  • Graphic design

Work experience

Kent Sport supports students from partner schools and colleges by providing proactive and engaging work experience placements.
