The University has launched a new centre to co-ordinate its work with employers to deliver higher and degree apprenticeships.

Under a new government funding model involving an apprenticeship levy, employers will see 100% of training costs paid for by the government.

The University’s new Centre for Higher and Degree Apprenticeships (CHDA) will support the development of more degree apprenticeships to add to the University’s existing high quality portfolio.

The new centre will provide a range of administrative and quality assurance services to ensure those developing and delivering new courses at Kent meet the highest possible standards, as well as liaising with employers to place their apprentices on its courses.

The University has a long track record in delivering apprenticeship courses, having first launched them in 2011. It currently has 71 students enrolled on two courses: the FdSc in Applied Bioscience for Laboratory Scientists and the FdSc in Applied Chemical Science for Laboratory Scientists. Students are employed by GSK, Medimmune, Pfizer, UCB, Thermofisher, AstraZeneca and Novartis.

CHDA is led by Dr Scott Wildman who pioneered the development of degree apprenticeships at the Medway School of Pharmacy.
