People United: Work Experience

Kate Lyden and Alexander Frampton, Politics and International Relations students, were chosen to take part in a work experience placement with People United.

People United are a charity who use arts and creativity to help grow community, kindness and empathy. They were founded in 2006 and are currently engaged in an overarching report of their ten years’ worth of research, conducted in conjunction with Kent’s School of Psychology department.

To celebrate this, they will be holding an event at the Tate Modern later this year. Kate and Alex have both been helping administer a campaign of invites to the event and working on databases of guests.

Kate let us know that she has been given the chance to engage with “a little bit of everything” to do with the running of the charity. The charity have so many projects on the go that it is difficult to keep up. Kate and Alex will both be helping to run a social media ‘kindness’ campaign, amongst other things.

Kate told the team that she is interested in a career in the charity sector, specifically in International Disaster Response, so this is invaluable experience for her.

Alex has not discounted the charity sector but is interested in a career in politics. He is using the placement to get an idea of his options and learn some transferrable skills.

Kimberley Griffin, School of Psychology, and Miguel Santos, School of Arts, also received the chance to work with People United. Kim will attending the charity’s BestFest event in Ramsgate to take photos and surveys of the community attending. Miguel will be helping the charity with fundraising and, as a keen volunteer with Kent Union, it is hoped he will be able to bring the charity and campus together.

Frances Moran, Operations Director for People United, was thrilled with all the students on placement. She felt having students gave the charity a different perspective.

Frances said:

Having students helps us look at things differently.

As the placement students have expressed an interest in working in the Charity Sector, or understanding it in more detail, Frances and Tom, the Founder of People United, will be running a 1-day workshop where they explain all aspects of founding and running a charity.
