Overview

The research project represents a piece of independent research carried out by the student which is written up as a research paper. A project supervisor is allocated to each student. The programme of research may consist of a literature review, analysis of existing data sets, analysis of newly-collected field or laboratory data, or a combination of these approaches. The topic of the paper must be directly relevant to the student's pathway within the MSc. in Conservation course to be eligible for the named pathway MSc.

Learning outcomes

Demonstrate ability to use a range of analytical tools for collecting and analysing research data in the specific field of research.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the protocols and styles required for presenting and discussing research results in the specific field of research.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the protocols and styles required for citing articles in peer-reviewed journals and other sources of published/unpublished work in the specific field of research.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the specific research field that relates to the research project.

Review and synthesise relevant literature in the subject area.
Plan a programme of research within an appropriate timeframe.
Draw general conclusions from the research carried out and place the work within a wider conservation context.
Work within a research team and/or with an appropriate conservation organisation.
Present a project proposal and final research report using an appropriate structure and style by a given deadline.
