Overview

This module will train students in the practical and methodological skills necessary to undertake and present original, advanced literary research. It will also highlight the transferable skills that an MA in literary studies develops and will equip students with the skills, techniques and approaches needed for advanced literary study and professional careers.

Topics will include, for example, developing and planning a research project; accessing and using archives; electronic and bibliographic sources; sustaining a large research project; and data and document management.

Learning outcomes

The intended subject specific learning outcomes.
On successfully completing the module students will be able to:

1 Understand how to plan and manage a literary research project effectively.
2 Access and effectively use electronic and bibliographic sources, and understand and know how to undertake archival research.
3 Assemble, critically evaluate, and organise research data and documents.
4 Present sophisticated, well-structured assignments.
5 Use scholarly bibliographic and referencing conventions appropriate for advanced literary scholarship.

The intended generic learning outcomes.
On successfully completing the module students will be able to:

1 Handle and synthesise complex information.
2 Manage research data and documents efficiently and effectively.
3 Display transferable skills in IT and project management.
