This highly practical module will build on skills and understanding developed in the prerequisite stage 1 module Individual and Group Performance, challenging you to develop your instrumental (including vocal) skills to an advanced level and employ additional techniques to further optimise practice sessions and hone professional presentation. Skills and understanding are promoted through individual instrumental or vocal lessons and weekly performance workshops. You will develop your musicianship by listening to others and by performing regularly, in solo and group contexts. You will also work across a range of musical styles, enabling you to develop the versatile skillset needed to tackle the demands of the current professional music industry.

On successfully completing the module students will be able to:
1) apply performance and practice techniques learned to contemporary music (in both performance and practice contexts;
2) demonstrate an advanced understanding of repertoire and role of their principal instrument, particularly with regard to recent music genres and the historical, cultural and technical issues that enhance knowledge of them;
3) demonstrate a systematic understanding of the relationship between musical performer and audience, including ways this may be manipulated;
4) conceive musical ideas and manipulate them in an inventive and individual way and as part of a group;
5) utilise the artistic and expressive skills necessary to communicate music convincingly to the listener, both as an individual and part of a group
