Current Interests

The study of partially-ordered or disordered/molecular Systems remains the main theme of current research using neutron or X-ray methods. Current topics are:-

  • molecular correlations in hydrogen-bonded systems such as water i.e. evolution of H-bond networks as a function of temperature
  • nucleation features of ice in various porous silicas including the ordered mesoscopic MCM type silicas
  • structural studies of H-bond connectivity in co-deposited samples of amorphous ice with an apolar atom/molecule. [e.g. Ar/D2O ice]
  • atomic and mesoscopic order in activated carbons, carbon fibres and carbon nanotubes
  • structural properties of water and cyclohexane in confined geometry
  • transport features of cyclohexane vapour in porous silicas; critical scattering and metastability
  • structural studies of water at interfaces and in liquid crystal bilayers; amphipiles of C12E4 and MPC

[possibly, development of energy-dispersive X-ray scattering (EDXS) and ultra-low small angle scattering (USAXS) on synchrotron sources for use on the topics listed above] Other interests and activities:-1) member of the executive committee of European Molecular Liquids Group (EMLG)
2) founder member of European Mobility Scheme for Physics Students (EMSPS) i.e. student exchange and transfer in Socrates scheme and otherwise.
3) founder member of the European Physics Education Network (EUPEN); thematic network currently making a comparability study of undergraduate Physics teaching across Europe.
European Activities - Undergraduate ExchangeIn addition to research collaboration with various groups in different European countries there have been specific developments associated with undergraduate exchanges. The general situation concerning student exchanges is described elsewhere [see entry u nder Undergraduate Courses] and special initiatives are described below:-

  • Chairman of Working Group 2 undertaking a European wide survey on Physics curricula and curriculum development in the EUPEN thematic network [analysis of questionnaire]
  • Promotion of exchange programmes for project work at undergraduate and postgraduate level
