Animated film helps explain Humanities research at Kent

Gary Hughes

Narrated by Chancellor Gavin Esler, the 3½ minute production encapsulates the current issues and debates for researchers.

These include time for research, metrics and measuring outcomes, the role of research grants, practice as research, internationalisation, public engagement and the REF.

Kent’s Faculty of Humanities has 224 research active academics located in six schools:  Architecture, Arts, English, European Culture and Languages, History, and Music & Fine Art.

The film is an output from a project led by Professor Ray Laurence and Dr Tamar Jeffers-McDonald, which sought to answer the frequently asked question: what is Humanities research?

Professor Laurence has previously used animation to bring topics such as ancient Rome to a wide public audience. His A Glimpse of Teenage Life in Ancient Rome  has so far received more than 1.2 million views on YouTube.

What is Humanities Research? was made by Folkestone-based  Cognitive.
