2015 Music Prize-winners and presenters

The University has presented Music Awards to six outstanding students, as part of its annual Summer Music Week celebrations.

Awards included the Canterbury Festival Music Prize, for a final-year student who has made an outstanding contribution to music, which was presented to Emma Murton. Emma graduated in 2015 with an MDrama specialising in Creative Producing and has recently joined the School of Music and Fine Art staff as Receptionist and PA to Kevin Dawe, Head of School.

A multi-talented musician, Emma is a harpist, singer, conductor and producer, and was this year’s student conductor of the Chamber Choir, who she also sang with. She has sung with the University Chorus and Cecilian Choir, and was harpist with the Symphony Orchestra and Lost Consort.

She said: ‘Kent has been a fantastic place for me to get involved in creative projects from theatre to music-making, all of which have been enjoyable and broaden my experiences. And the School of Music and Fine Art in the Historic Dockyard campus is a lovely place to work, with talented and creative people. I’m excited for the term to start!’

Other 2015 Music Awards were:

  • The Colyer-Fergusson Music Prize, for a student who has made a major contribution to organising music at the University – Rowena Murrell.
  • The John Craven Music Prize, for a returning student who has made a major contribution to music at Kent –  Anne Engels.
  • The First-year Prize, for a student who has made a significant contribution to music during their first year – Jonathan Butten
  • The University Music Awards Committee Prize, for students who have made a special contribution to music – awarded jointly to Hannah Perrin and Kathryn Cox.

The students received congratulations from Rosie Turner, Director of the Canterbury Festival; Jonathan Monckton, former Chair of the Colyer-Fergusson Charitable Trust; Professor John Craven, formerly Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Kent; Professor Keith Mander, Deputy Vice-Chancellor; and members of the Music Awards Committee.
