A team of scientists from the University have helped bring science to life for shoppers on Ramsgate high street with their popular ‘Cool Chemistry’ show.

Jointly organised by two local residents with funding from the Royal Society of Chemistry outreach fund, members of the University’s School of Physical Sciences were invited to help transform an empty town centre shop into a pop-up ‘theatre’ to showcase science. The ‘theatre’ featured 12 free demonstrations of the University’s ‘Cool Chemistry’ Show over two days in November for any passers-by who wanted to join in.

The ‘Cool Chemistry’ show, which is a regular feature in a series of events run by the University’s outreach team, is delivered by Kent students and staff. It features audience participation to explain core chemistry concepts such as liquids, solids and gases.

The science is brought to life with demonstrations of the effects liquid nitrogen, one of the coldest substances on earth at -196 C, can have on items including bananas, balloons and bouquets of flowers. The show gives the audience an opportunity to touch a freshly made cloud and to test what happens when you crush flowers that have been frozen to temperatures of just above -200 C.
