Biochemistry

*The Biochemistry degree will allow you to study the molecular make up of living things. The first year modules will provide a broad survey of the various biological and chemical disciplines, including biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, microbiology and physiology. In subsequent years these concepts are developed further in the study of gene regulation, cell communication, the mechanisms of enzyme action and the integration of metabolism. Your choice of option modules and specialised topics courses will allow you to study some of these areas in greater detail, giving your degree a unique flavour.

Stage 1
Stage 1 is the first year of your degree programme. There are six core modules and two optional modules to choose.

The core modules are:

  • Introduction to Biochemistry
  • Enzymes and Introduction to
    Metabolism
  • Molecular and Cellular Biology
  • The Microbial World
  • Skills for Bioscientists
  • Fundamental Chemistry for Chemists and Bioscientists

Plus two options from

  • Human Physiology and Disease
  • Chemistry for Biologists*
  • Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry
  • Fundamental Human Biology#
  • General and Biological Psychology

*(compulsory for grade C or below at Chemistry A level)
# (compulsory for grade C or below at biology A level)

Stage 2
Stage 2 is the second year of your degree programme. There are six compulsory modules:

The core modules are:

  • Catabolic and Biosynthetic
    Processes of Life
  • Gene Expression and its Control
  • Cell Biology
  • How Enzymes Work
  • Skills for Biologists II
  • Physiology

Plus two options from:

  • Infection and Immunity
  • Developmental Biology
  • Physiology of the Microbial Cell
  • Pharmacology
  • Medicinal Chemistry
Stage 3
Stage 3 is the final year of your degree programme

All modules are compulsory:

  • Research Project (double module)
  • Skills for Biochemists
  • Cell Communication
  • Biological Membranes
  • Protein Structure and Function
  • Integrated Endocrinology and Metabolism
  • Advanced Immunology
