Law Clinic takes the mystery out of family court proceedings

Press Office

Kent Law Clinic is providing the local community with an opportunity to learn more about family court proceedings at a unique event on Wednesday 25 January.

Taking place from 17.00 to 18.30 in the court room of the Clinic’s new £5 million Wigoder Law Building on the University’s Canterbury campus, the free event will involve local barristers, judges and representatives from the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass) alongside members of the Law Clinic.

Kent Law Clinic helps members of the local community who are unable to afford legal representation. The family court event offers anyone expecting to be a ‘litigant in person’ the opportunity to experience what it feels like to attend court and help to explain what is likely to happen at a family hearing.

Individual legal advice on specific cases will not be available but the event aims to address a broad spectrum of questions ranging from when to arrive at court and where to sit, to how to prepare, organise and present a case in the family court.

Law Clinic solicitor and event organiser Philippa Bruce says: ‘Representing yourself in family court proceedings can be very stressful and the court itself can feel like an intimidating place if you are unsure what to expect so our event aims to help people gain knowledge and confidence’.
