American scientist and author Professor Jared Diamond has been honoured at the Innovation in Academia Awards, sponsored by the University and Britweek.

The awards ceremony, which took place at the British Consul-General’s residence in Los Angeles on 29 April, was hosted by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist and columnist David Horsey.

Professor Jared Diamond from the University of California, Los Angeles, was named overall winner for his “remarkable impact across higher education in the US”.

His award was presented by Francis O’Toole, BritWeek Board Member, who described Professor Diamond as ‘a scientist with that rare ability to speak to the public and be understood. To his students, he is a star in an incredible faculty.’

Other award-winners were:

  • Professor Elsa Stamatopoulou, Columbia University – Innovation in Academia Award for Arts & Culture
  • Dr Stamatis Vokos, Seattle Pacific University (and Kent alumnus) – Innovation in Academia Award for Science and Business.

The Innovation in Academia awards were established in 2014 by the University of Kent, in partnership with BritWeek, to celebrate the strong academic link between Europe and the US. The awards honour academics whose professional accomplishments have made a significant and lasting impact in the field of higher education and whose work and character have earned the respect and admiration of their professional colleagues.
