The University has welcomed the news that Canterbury will have its Purple Flag status renewed for 2020.

Kent is one of the partners in the scheme, which is similar to the Blue Flag scheme for beaches but which recognises a thriving and safe evening and night-time economy.

The award is highly sought after, with only around 70 cities and towns in the UK receiving Purple Flag accreditation in 2017.

Jane Glew, the University’s Interim Director of Student Services, said the renewal of Canterbury’s accreditation was good news for students and staff.

‘This is welcome recognition once again that Canterbury is a safe place to live, study and work in. The city provides a vibrant mix of entertainment while promoting the safety and wellbeing of those enjoying a night out.’

Canterbury’s Purple Flag status will be renewed in December 2019, with an awards evening being planned for early 2020.

As well as the University and its Kent Union, the Purple Flag committee includes representatives from Canterbury Christ Church University, Christ Church Student Union, Canterbury City Council, District Watch, Kent Police, the Marlowe Theatre, the Curzon, AKON security as well as owners and managers from various pubs, bars and clubs from across the city.
