Oliver will join Gulbenkian in May 2018 from Rich Mix, East London’s independent arts centre, where he is Artistic Director.
His appointment follows Gulbenkian’s previous Director Liz Moran taking up the post of the University’s first Director of Arts and Culture.
Liz said: ‘I am pleased to have appointed Oliver as Director of Gulbenkian. His knowledge, experience, energy, ambition and passion will help develop the University’s arts and culture offer through Gulbenkian even further. Oliver’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity will also be a major asset. His appointment marks the beginning of another new and exciting chapter for the arts in Kent.’
Oliver Carruthers commented: ‘Gulbenkian is at an exciting point in its journey, fifty years old in 2019, and now playing a vital role in creating opportunities for young people and emerging talent. I am delighted to be joining the organisation at this time and looking forward to working with the team to grow our artistic ambition and to create deeper connections with students and staff at the University and the communities we serve.’
