In 2016 the University added a record 145,000 additional bed nights to Canterbury's tourist accommodation capacity by renting out its student accommodation in the vacations.

The University has over 5400 beds on campus and offers a variety of different packages from individual bed and breakfasts to large group stays.

Kevin Stuckey, Head of Residences and Conferences at Kent, commented on the rise of bookings from groups such as fully managed academic conferences, summer and language schools and residential conferences/events.

He noted that last year’s income generated during student vacation periods brought in over £4 million – which helps fund the up-keep and refurbishment of University facilities.

He also said that the thousands of visitors that come and stay at the University are vitally important to both the local and regional economy and provide a real boost for tourism in the Canterbury area.

In previous years Kent has hosted a range of international events, including athletes and spectator groups from overseas during the London Olympic games 2012 and groups associated with the British Open Golf tournament in 2011.
