The Durrell Institute for Conservation and Ecology and the School of Anthropology and Conservation annual reception and lecture will be given by leading environmentalist and author Tony Juniper.
Tony Juniper is an independent sustainability and environment advisor, working as Special Advisor to the Prince of Wales’s International Sustainability Unit, is a Fellow with the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, and co-founder of the sustainability consultancy group Robertsbridge.
The DICE lecture, entitled Why ecology and economy must embrace, which is free and open to all, takes place on Thursday 9 March 2017 at 18.30 in Woolf Lecture Theatre at the University’s Canterbury campus. There is free parking after 17.00.
Tony Juniper’s talk will address the ‘dangerous and deeply flawed misconception’ that the ongoing degradation of the natural world is a regrettable but inevitable ‘price of progress’.
He will argue that healthy and functioning natural systems underpin all aspects of our welfare, from the recycling of nutrients in soils that sustain food production to the replenishment of water supplies by forests. He says ecology and economy must be fused, not only to protect nature, but the interests of people too.
He speaks and writes widely on conservation and sustainability themes and is the author of many books, including the multi-award winning best-seller What Has Nature Ever Done For Us? published in 2013. His latest book Climate Change (A Ladybird Expert Book), which was co-authored with Prince of Wales and Emily Shuckburgh, was published in January 2017 to worldwide media interest.
