Student behind new Comedy Fringe Festival

Press Office

Stand-up Comedy MA student, Matt Hoss, is producing a new Comedy Fringe Festival in a city centre pub in Canterbury.

Matt, who studies in the School of Arts, created ‘Toys in the Attic,’ a comedy club in the city’s Jolly Sailor pub in Northgate.  He has been living in Canterbury for four years.

Originally from North Yorkshire, Matt’s comedy heroes are Louis C.K. and Richard Herring, who he describes as ‘awe-inspiring’ and who taught him innovative ways to create diverse comedy. As an avid stand-up fan, comedians like Mark Thomas, Hannibal Buress and Bridget Christie have also inspired him.

He says he would love the new festival to be a community art project ‘which everyone gets involved with’, adding that it is about demonstrating ‘good art in Canterbury and people engaging with comedy in intimate venues’.

The Canterbury Comedy Fringe Festival dates:

Jolly Sailor: 2,3,6,9,10,13,17,18 June. Tickets £5 each. 7pm start.

Lumley Theatre, University of Kent: 7 June. Free entrance. 7pm start.
