World-renowned political philosopher Dr Etienne Balibar will give a talk entitled ‘Migration and Contemporary Capitalism’ at the University of Kent on 3 February.

Étienne Balibar is Professor Emeritus of moral and political philosophy at Université Paris Nanterre and Professor Emeritus of Humanities at the University of California, Irvine. He is widely published in the areas of epistemology, Marxist philosophy, moral and political philosophy, with special reference to religion and political economy, racism and nationalism.

His talk is the third of this year’s lectures in the Public Keynote Series hosted by the University’s School of English. This series was created to encourage discussion on a broad range of academic subjects. Previous speakers include literary theorist and critic Terry Eagleton FBA, and film-maker and historian David Olusoga.

The focus of Dr Balibar’s talk will include reference to his theory of a new ‘population law’ of migrations in modern capitalism.

The event is open to students, staff and the public.

Dr Bashir Abu-Manneh, the event organiser and Reader in Postcolonial Literature, said: ‘Migration is one of the biggest public interest topics today and Dr Balibar is at the cutting edge of explaining its effects and laws of motion.’
