The University’s annual concert by around 200 members of its Chorus and Symphony Orchestra will be held in Canterbury Cathedral on Saturday 10 March at 7.30pm.
The concert is linked by two dominant military figures of the early nineteenth century. The Symphony Orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Third Symphony, the Eroica, originally called Bonaparte and a revolutionary work in every sense.
The University Chorus will then be joined by four outstanding young soloists, Rhiannon Llewellyn, Bethan Langford, Satriya Krisna and Thomas Humphreys, for a performance of Haydn’s dramatic Nelson Mass, which received its premiere in the presence of the Admiral himself.
For this concert, the University has also commissioned a contemporary take on ‘heroism’ with the first performance of A Hero Passes, an orchestral work by the internationally-acclaimed, Kent-based composer Matthew King.
Conductor and University Director of Music, Susan Wanless, said that to bring so many University musicians together to perform such dramatic pieces in the spectacular surroundings of the Cathedral nave, together with an exciting world premiere, will certainly be a highlight of our musical year.
