New initiatives in international scholarships at the University of Kent

Posted on 27th July 2017 by International Recruitment

Scholarships are a vital tool for the recruitment of high quality international students and can help develop future leaders, foster better international relations, help applicants in financial need, and attract candidates from developing countries.

The University’s International Recruitment directorate has been instrumental in securing the following new scholarship opportunities, and celebrates the achievements of our scholars through a series of VIP events, such as lunch with the Vice-Chancellor and a meeting with the Lord Mayor of Canterbury.

Chevening is the UK Government’s prestigious international awards scheme that offers an opportunity for future leaders, influencers and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK. Kent is a Chevening partner and we welcome applications from Chevening scholars.

Kent has a long standing relationship with Chevening and scholars have been successfully placed at the University for several years. In the 2016-17 academic year, 15 scholars studied at the University. We also have academic staff with long-standing relationships with Chevening as application reviewers.

Our formal partnership with Chevening allows Kent to benefit from increased prominence, leading to an increase in our global impact through Chevening’s worldwide reach: a physical presence in more than 160 countries, social media with a following of more than 170,000, 44,000 influential alumni, and a website visited by millions.

Chevening supports Kent’s strategic goals by tailoring the partnership in line with our international and academic priorities to grow international recruitment. The partnership will support, this year, applicants from Malaysia, Nigeria and Turkey, strategic Tier 1 markets key to the University’s international recruitment strategy.

GREAT Scholarships

The British Council has recently launched two major international scholarship campaigns: the “UK-India Year of Culture GREAT Scholarships 2018” and the “GREAT Scholarships 2018 - China”. Both campaigns are designed to promote UK study opportunities to a global audience and are open to all UK higher education institutions.

Kent is already participating in the India GREAT Scholarship, offering five dedicated scholarships of £5,000 for 2017 entry, and has submitted a bid for further awards in India for 2018, and ten GREAT China awards.

GREAT Scholarships are jointly funded by the GREAT Britain Campaign and UK higher education institutions, targeting prospective students who will enrol into UK higher education institutions in the autumn of 2018.

The aim of the scholarship is to significantly grow the number of international students in the UK, promote the UK’s higher education sector to a targeted audience, and reinforce the message that the UK continues to welcome the brightest and best international students.

The Aviva Scholarships Programme

A joint partnership between Aviva and 11 of the UK’s leading universities, the Aviva Scholarship Programme brings together two of the UK’s world-leading sectors – education and insurance – to promote British education and international exchanges. This is an exciting programme intended to significantly increase the reach of UK institutions within Asia and act as a multiplying force to participating universities’ own marketing campaigns.

Kent will provide a minimum of 10 scholarships which offer successful students a 20% tuition fee rebate for their entire course duration (three years for undergraduates). The University retains discretion over the application process and selection of students.

Aviva is a leading British insurer with active operations in many of Kent’s key overseas markets and the programme will be launched in Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, China, Vietnam and Taiwan. Aviva will use its significant presence in these markets to source qualified student candidates for participating universities. In return for each university’s commitment to the programme, Aviva will actively promote UK education and participating universities’ reputation and prestige to a large group of consumers in this growing market.

A video message from Aviva’s Chairman, Sir Adrian Montague, announcing the launch of the scheme can be viewed at
