50th celebrations in Paris by University of Kent

Students, staff and alumni were warmly received at the British Ambassador’s Residence in Paris to mark the 50th anniversary.

The event was hosted by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow and Sir Peter Ricketts, British Ambassador to France on Thursday 19 February.

50th anniversary events are being held in each of the European cities where we have study centres – Brussels, Paris, Athens and Rome. The first took place in Brussels and the next one will take place at the Galleria Borghese in Rome on 1 April.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Keith Mander highlighted Kent’s development over the past 50 years and its aspirations for the next 50.

Professor Mander reflected on the University and student life in 1965 and compared to today’s Kent students. Since 1965 our student population has grown from less than 500 students to nearly 20,000.

Professor Bernhard Klein, from the School of English, also delivered a speech about the University’s involvement with Text and Event in Early Modern Europe (TEEME), an international doctoral programme in early modern studies which is funded by the European Union under the Erasmus Mundus Scheme.
