Inaugural Jennison Lecture titled 'Thunderbolts & Lightning - are they really frightening?' will take place on Wednesday 22 October, 6-7 pm.

The lecture, part of the University’s 50th anniversary celebrations and hosted by the School of Engineering and Digital Arts takes place in the Jennison Lecture Theatre on the Canterbury campus.

Sponsored  by the Institute of Engineering and Technology, the lecture will be delivered by Rhys Phillips, Research Engineer in the Lightning & Electrostatics Team at Airbus Group. It will be followed by a drinks reception in the Jennison social area.

Paraphrasing that famous line from Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Rhys Phillips will look at the phenomenon of lightning. In a light-hearted and informative talk, Rhys,m who is also a science broadcaster,  will explain the processes which lead to a lightning strike and the different types of lightning that can exist.

Rhys Phillips is a Research Engineer in the Lightning & Electrostatics Team at Airbus Group Innovations where he has worked since 2009. He is an active STEM Ambassador and his work promoting the sciences to schoolchildren and the general public has resulted in awards from the Welsh Livery Guild, the Institute of Physics and STEMNet.
