Two new graduates are going on an African adventure as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Gold awards.

The three-week trip by Matt Levett and Chris Detsicas will include an expedition on foot along the coast from South Africa to Mozambique, visiting a school and orphanage, taking part in a game ranger basic skills course and living on one rand per day.

Both Chris and Matt graduated in July from the Computer Science with a Year in Industry BSc programme. They  raised money for their expedition by working their way through university, but will be supported by a contribution from the School of Computing.

The Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) programme has four sections, volunteering, physical, skills and expedition. To achieve the DofE Gold Award, a young person must spend 12 months volunteering, at least six months on the physical and skills sections and take part in an expedition of at least four days and three nights.

As well as the expedition, Matt has also won a place to attend the international Summer School at the University’s centre in Brussels, where he will study politics.
