Award-winning writer Iain Sinclair is joining the University's School of English as its first Guest Professor of Creative Writing.

Acclaimed internationally for his fiction, non-fiction and poetry, Iain Sinclair will present an inaugural public lecture on Wednesday 7 October at 4pm at the University’s Canterbury campus Keynes Lecture Theatre 1. The lecture, which is free and open to all, will be followed by a reception and a screening of his recent film collaboration, By Our Selves.

In his role as Guest Professor within the School of English, Iain Sinclair will contribute to MA and BA programmes in Creative Writing, providing students at all levels with an opportunity to attend his seminars, talks and project workshops.

As well as benefiting students, the appointment of Iain Sinclair will also provide further stimulus for new research within the School, which was ranked 8th in the Guardian University Guide 2016 and 10th for Research Intensity in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.

Professor David Herd, Head of the School of English, welcomed the new appointment: ‘Iain Sinclair will be a very exciting presence in the School and the University. His seminars and workshops will be of huge benefit to our students and the range and scope of his writing will be a source of great stimulation to our research culture. We very much look forward to working with him.’

Among Iain Sinclair’s most acclaimed works is Hackney: That Rose-Red Empire, which was shortlisted for the 2010 Ondaatje Award. He writes regularly for the London Review of Books and the Guardian and appears frequently on BBC Radio 3 and 4. In 1996 he edited the ground-breaking poetry anthology Conductors of Chaos.
